Dutch Standard Planes

Sep 1, 2021 | Olde Tools

It’s not well known however; the Dutch were the first commercial plane makers and this style is typically referred to as the Dutch Standard. It’s my understanding that the carvings at the front and in the escapement were controlled by the trade guilds. Every ten years or so the carving pattern surrounding the date would change slightly.

Very few of these exist in Canada. The only others I have seen are at the National Museum up in Ottawa. I had the opportunity to purchase this one at The Pickering Tools of the Trades Show a few years back and I jumped at the opportunity.
